The essay by Greg Maxwell that accompanies this torrent (containing three-hundred and fifty years worth of scientific essays from the Royal Society, previously paywalled by JSTOR) argues compellingly against the enclosure of academic research by digital publishers. The argument is well worth reading, and perhaps needless to say we agree with its ideas and gesture. These materials are part of our collective heritage, to say nothing of our human labor; they do not belong to JSTOR or anyone else, and they should be freely accessible to everyone.
It was announced today that activist Aaron Swartz, charged with thirteen counts of felony hacking by the Attorney General for allegedly pulling 4 million articles from JSTOR, has committed suicide at age 26.
